Programming Associate’s Degree Programs

Programming Career and Training Information

An associate’s degree in computer programming will afford you the opportunity to enter the exciting and constantly growing field of technology and its applications. Programmers are indispensable in this day and age, whether repairing, designing or conserving programs and writing specific code in the languages required for the specific programs. Computer programmers are often at the very heart of an organization, making sure that it runs efficiently.

Computer programmers are also called:

  • Internet programmers
  • Systems programmers
  • Software or hardware programmers
  • Business programmers
  • Programming analysts
  • Database programmers

In order to attain any of the above careers, you will be required to have an extensive knowledge of technology, computer programs, and distinct programming languages.

The most important task of a programmer is to write code. In order to learn these programming languages, which change constantly, you will need to attend courses that will help you apply these languages. Some languages are becoming obsolete, being replaced with even more advanced systems that require programmers to be on the front lines of technological understanding and engineering.

Some of the languages that are utilized today include but are not limited to:

  • C++
  • Visual Basic
  • Java
  • Javascript
  • Perl
  • ADA
  • GUI applications
  • HTML and other internet languages
  • CASE tools
  • PowerBuilder

In order to make themselves more marketable to potential employers, most programmers will learn more than one language, even four or more. In addition, the languages that are created today can be learned more easily because they are derived from other languages that were written in the past. Like learning a foreign language, it is of primary importance that computer programmers master their languages in order to write the code smoothly and correctly.

Also, even though many computer programmers are assigned to write code, there are already many huge databases which contain thousands of pre-written lines of code. This assists programmers write their code within a shorter period of time and for any business or organization, time is associated with budget concerns.

After writing the code, computer programmers must test it to ensure that it runs correctly. If error messages occur, then the programmer must “debug” the program in order for it to run efficiently. Testing and debugging programs are a very large part of a computer programmer’s employment.

An associate’s degree in computer programming will open many doors for the potential graduate. Whether you want to work in a small business or a large corporation, there is always a need for qualified programmers. Many online schools also offer the opportunity for their graduates to return and take more courses when other languages become available for them to learn.
