Public Health Career and Training Information

An associate’s program in Public Health encompasses learning within the classroom and in practical situations within its curriculum.  Graduates from the Public Health program find themselves employed within public health organizations, health care facilities, hospitals and even governmental offices.

The five core areas within the curriculum of Public Health that help students perform essential tasks are:

  1. Health Services Administration
  2. Environmental Health
  3. Epidemiology
  4. Biostatistics
  5. Health Education and Behavioral Science

The associate’s degree in Public Health concentrates on each of the five core areas by studying courses associated with each.  The curriculum will prepare students to transfer their courses to a Bachelor’s Degree program that recognizes the Public Health Core Competencies at the national level.  It also requires each student to enter a practicum that accommodates the interests of the individual student within the field of public health.  Since September 11th, 2001, the public health curriculum also incorporates courses in crisis management, mass casualty and bio-terrorism.  The classes that the degree entails can be integrated through online distance learning classes and interactive conferencing.

The associate’s degree in Public Health also affords the student the opportunity to become a CHES (Certified Health Education Specialist).  The CHES specifically evaluates the health needs of the individual and the community at large.  He or she also actualizes effective education in public health and public health programs and has a managerial capacity to provide health education needs and resources and also evaluate programs.

The goals of the accredited Public Health curriculum is to:

  1. Assertain and distribute the solutions to public health care problems,
  2. Create research facilities and put them into practice, and
  3. Educate the public health directors of tomorrow.
