A medical informatics’ goal is to enhance the outcomes of health care industries through information technology in all sectors of health care organizations. In order to complete these goals, medical informatics online programs must attain certain objectives in order to:

  • Research to help increase the medical informatics’ knowledge,
  • Give a sound education to people in medical organizations about the duties of the area of medical informatics,
  • To research knowledge of people within the medical informatics industry, and

An associate’s degree in medical informatics must have an accredited curriculum that includes:

  • health information and expert systems
  • medical imaging
  • epidemiology within the genetics field
  • quality of health care

Medical informatics is essential to the applications of computer technology within physiology programs and intensive care units within a hospital setting.

The accredited program also includes a computer survey in general medicine class and is the core course within an associate’s degree in medical informatics. Since the information technology applications have changed greatly in the past decades and especially within the health care industry, there are courses that have had to be included in the curriculum.

These courses include but are not limited to:

  • Database and ORACLE design
  • Computer application programming
  • Information systems within the health industry
  • Quality control
  • Medical informatics terminology
  • Ethics and standards in the medical informatics industry
  • Development of websites

All of these courses and a desire to help medical informational technology departments are essential for a degree in medical informatics.
