Medical Assistant Career and Training Information

The demand for medical assistants is very high because physicians are in dire need of qualified professionals who can help them within their offices.  Assistants are needed across the health care spectrum including chiropractors, oncologists, orthodontists, dentists or general practitioners.

All medical assistants must be able to accomplish tasks such as explaining patient procedures,  performing clerical work (billing and insurance claims), and also give and collect tests.

An online associate’s degree for medical assistants usually takes between one and two years, which gives the assistant the opportunity to work in the aforementioned practices.  The curriculum is usually focused on:

• Anatomy and physiology
• Medical terminology
• Medical procedures
• Distribution of medication
• Techniques within a laboratory
• Patient diagnosis
• General medical ethics

In addition to the above core curriculum, students are required to learn about:

• Insurance processing
• Office operations
• Medical transcription
• General accounting procedures

All of the above obviously prepares the medical assistant graduate to perform a great number of diverse tasks within an office setting.  There are state regulations for medical assistants and some states even permit medical assistants to give injections or to draw blood.  Each state has different regulations so check with your state’s specific licensing boards before continuing any online courses.
