Health Services Career and Training Information

An associate’s degree in Health Services provides a curriculum to students that prepares them to manage health care services, including processing insurance claims, billing, and keeping medical records.  The associate’s degree gives students the opportunity to learn administrative skills that are essential within the health services industry.  Technology and business concepts are also integral in the curriculum.

There are certain core courses that are necessary for a degree in the Health Services field such as medical terms, coding and record keeping.  The curriculum also is comprised of insurance billing, policy of health care, and health care law.  There are business classes such as finance, accounting, and health care management, as well.  There are other elective courses that are not within the core curriculum that might include foreign languages, communications and general liberal arts courses.

To be an effective health services administrator, you must learn the following skills:

  • Processing of Insurance Claims
  • Health care administrative duties
  • Medical Terminology
  • Maintenance of patient files
  • Medical coding and billing

An associate’s degree in health services gives students the chance to learn about health services technology and general business courses.  Students will learn about assisting health care organizations to communicate with patients, in addition to governmental agencies endemic to the health care industry.
